ABOUT THE ALBUM

The Split is Tom Griesgraber's soundtrack album from the feature length documentary film Prairie Prophecy. The music features Tom Griesgraber on Chapman Stick®, analog synths and samples. Tom's California Guitar Trio bandmate Bert Lams also makes a guest appearance on acoustic guitar. The tracks are presented in order from the film, with themes that shift and develop as the album progresses. The instrumentation also plays a thematic role. As the film explores the “split” between industrialized agriculture and the natural world, The Stick® and a small chamber orchestra are used more to represent the natural world and analog synthesizers are used more to represent the industrialized approach to agriculture. 

Tom Griesgraber is one of the world's most accomplished and respected Chapman Stick players. The instrument is an unusual 12-string guitar/bass hybrid played generally with a technique closer to piano and capable of producing sounds similar to guitar, bass and keyboards. He has performed internationally and tours regularly as a member of the acclaimed California Guitar Trio and as a soloist.

Prairie Prophecy explores a revolutionary way of thinking about agriculture-one rooted in nature, resilience and long-term stewardship of the land. Drawing on the ideas of scientist-farmer Wes Jackson and the work of The Land Institute, the film examines how perennial and natural systems agriculture offer practical responses to soil loss, climate change, and the future of food. 

Blending clear-eyed science with personal stories, archival material, and evocative prairie imagery, the film moves fluidly between big ideas and lived experience. Thoughtful, visually rich, and inviting, Prairie Prophecy encourages viewers to engage with sustainability not as an abstraction, but as a human-scale story with real-world evidence.
